Sound Mixer Workshop

This lesson was to get an understanding of the basic tools of Adobe Audition. We were given a simple short cartoon and a collection of pre-recorded sounds to work with. The most difficult part of this editing task was that there was not a single audio track that went with the polar bears footsteps, instead we had to cut out individual footsteps and line up each step with the bears on screen. The workshop made me realise the amount of time it takes lining up and editing audio tracks so they work in sync with the video files and it is something that I should take into consideration when it comes to putting the portfolio together as recording the sounds is going to be easy, it is the assembly that will be difficult.

Recording On Set For Portfolio

ADR Workshop

The automated dialogue recording session has been one of the most successful so far. For the session, we were given a section of film from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) and two people had to ADR the lines of Jack Sparrow and Captain Teague. In this practical, I worked on Audition to set cues and record the others as they recorded over the original lines. By recording straight into Audition helped to make it easier for myself and others to see if the recorded tracks synced up well with the onscreen movements. Also by recording into Audition, it sped up the editing process as we were not messing around with SD cards and transferring the files. In the portfolio later, it would be good to have a set up like this, especially when re-recording the footsteps of the characters on screen. Unfortunately, the files from this session were misplaced before we had a chance to get a copy of it.

Foley Workshop

This session was about creating foley for a short animation piece. We had to work together to create a list of sounds that would fit with the onscreen actions and how we would capture them around the university. The tasks went well and encourage innovation from the class, for example using the sound of twisting a plastic bottle to create a sound for the avocado grenade. Organisation was key for this task as it ended up with us having around 30 different audio tracks. To make sure that we kept organised, I placed the track number next to the action on the list, so in the edit everyone knew where to find the track that was needed for that action. This method of organisation is something that I will take into the portfolio assignment later as it will help speed up the editing process.
